Sadao Miyaoi
Year of death: September 23, 1858 (October 29, 1858)
Year of birth: September 10, 1797 (October 29, 1797)
A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period. He was originally known as Monzo and later Sahei. He was known as a practitioner of archery and Kirei Dojin. He was the eldest son of Miyake Sadakata, the headman of Matsuzawa Village, Katori County, Shimousa Province (Higata Town, Chiba Prefecture). His father was a student of Hirata Atsutane, and Sadao also became a disciple of Atsutane in 1826. After succeeding him as headman, he devoted himself to village administration, while also endeavoring to instruct on everything from the nature of agriculture to specific agricultural techniques through writings such as Minka Yojutsu, Kokueki Honron, Nougyou Yoshu, and Kusaki Senshu Roku. However, he failed in village administration due to a poor harvest in 1833, and wandered from place to place. He returned to the village around the Kaei period (1848-1854), but his subsequent writings became more and more colored in the idealistic style characteristic of Hirata studies, and his former practical attitude disappeared. <References> Noboru Kawana, "Agricultural Management of a Village Landowner in Shimousa" (Chiba Keizai Junior College Business and Economics Review No. 7)
