...A Greek kingdom founded around 250 B.C. by Diodotos, the satrap of Bactria, after it became independent from the Seleucid Empire. Its capital was in Balkh (anciently called Baktra) in what is now northern Afghanistan. Bactria is the historical name for the region from the Hindu Kush to the middle reaches of the Amu Darya.
