When Archbishop Bakócz Tomás of Esztergom (c. 1442-1521) announced the formation of a crusade against the Turks in an attempt to resolve both domestic unrest and the threat of plundering by the Ottoman Turks, a large army of peasant soldiers responded by gathering in Pest, joined by the city's artisans, village clergy, and minor nobles. However, the great nobles, who were suspicious of the crusade plan, were afraid of the armed peasants and persuaded the archbishop to cancel the plan, and used force to suppress the arming of the peasants in their own territories. …
