Institute of Population Problems

Japanese: 人口問題研究所 - じんこうもんだいけんきゅうじょ

It was established in 1939 as an affiliated research institute of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. As Japan's only government research institute on population issues, its activities cover a wide range, including research on domestic and international population issues, implementing numerous field surveys on fertility and migration, and providing materials and opinions on population policies. The institute was an interdisciplinary research institute in both name and reality, with experts from social sciences such as sociology and economics as well as experts from natural sciences such as genetics, medicine, urban engineering, psychology, and nutrition (consisting of four departments: Population Policy Research Department, Population Structure Research Department, Population Trend Research Department, and Population Information Department), and it was one of the larger population research institutes internationally.

1939年，厚生省の付属研究機関として設置された。日本で唯一の人口問題についての政府の研究機関として，内外の人口問題の研究，出生力，移動等に関する幾多の実地調査の施行，人口政策に関する資料や意見の提示等，その活動は広範囲にわたる。この研究所は名実ともに学際的な研究機関で，社会学，経済学等の社会科学出身の専門家とともに遺伝学，医学，都市工学，心理学，栄養学等の自然科学出身の専門家を擁し(人口政策研究部，人口構造研究部，人口動向研究部，人口情報部の4部から構成)，人口研究機関としては国際的にも規模の大きいほうに属した。
