Meimuna opalifera

Japanese: ツクツクホウシ（英語表記）Meimuna opalifera

An insect of the Hemiptera family, Cicadaidae (illustration). Also known as Tsukutsukuboshi. It becomes more common in the latter half of summer and is common throughout Japan. It is a small cicada with a body length of 26-33 mm and a forewing span of 76-85 mm. The body has dark green markings on a black background. The head bulges forward significantly, and the male's abdominal valve is triangular with a pointed tip. The female's ovipositor protrudes beyond the tip of the abdomen. In Japan, it is distributed from southern Hokkaido to Akusekijima Island in the Tokara Islands, and is commonly seen in plains and low mountain areas. It appears from August to September and sings with a unique rhythmic voice.

半翅目セミ科の昆虫（イラスト）。ツクツクボウシともいう。夏の後半に多くなり，日本各地にふつう。小型のセミで，体長26～33mm，前翅の開張76～85mm。体は黒地に暗緑色の斑紋をもつ。頭部は前方に著しく膨らみ，雄の腹弁は三角形でその先端はとがる。雌の産卵管は腹端を超えて突出する。日本では北海道南部から吐噶喇列島悪石島まで分布し，平地～低山地にふつうに見られる。8～9月に出現し，独特なリズミカルな声で鳴く。
