[died] December 11, 1757. London. British actor and playwright. He performed Restoration plays and his own comedies, and was also long involved in the management of Drury Lane Theatre. As a playwright, he was influential in the development of sentimental drama in England. His most famous work is The Careless Husband (1704). He also revised Richard III and adapted Molière's Tartuffe, and wrote An Apology for the Life of Mr. Cibber (40). His son Theophilus (1703-1758) was also an actor and playwright. He was briefly involved in the management of Drury Lane Theatre, but was brought down by a scandal.

Cibber(Cibert), Caius Gabriel

[died] 1700. London Danish sculptor. Known for his Baroque architectural sculptures and garden sculptures. Son of a court cabinet maker, he was sent to Rome by Frederick III to train, but apparently never returned to Denmark. All of his works are in England, and while they have the characteristics of English sculpture, the influence of Italian and Dutch sculpture can also be seen. His representative works include the relief of Charles II Relieving London after the Great Fire (1674), and A Raging Madness and A Melancholy Madness (both 1670s, gate of Bedlam Hospital). His son, Colley Cibber, was a well-known actor.

デンマークの彫刻家。バロック建築彫刻，庭園彫刻で知られる。宮廷家具職人の子で，フレデリック3世によって，修業のためローマに送られたが，デンマークには戻らなかったらしい。作品はすべてイギリスにあり，イギリス彫刻の特徴をそなえているが，イタリア，オランダ彫刻の影響も認められる。代表作『ロンドンの大火後救済するチャールズ2世』の浮彫 (1674) ，『荒れる狂気』と『憂鬱な狂気』 (ともに 1670年代，ベドラム病院の門) など。息子のコリー・シバーは俳優として著名。
