Baktria

...The capital was Balkh (anciently called Baktra) in the north of Afghanistan. Bactria is the historical name for the area from the Hindu Kush to the middle reaches of the Amu Darya. This area was conquered by Alexander the Great at the end of the 4th century BCE, and after his death it came under the control of the Seleucid Empire. Until now, no relics indicating the existence of the kingdom had been found, except for beautiful Greek Bactrian silver coins. However, since 1964, a genuine Greek city has been discovered at Ai-Khanum, about 300 km east of Balkh, at the confluence of the Kokcha River and the Amu Darya. French archaeologists have excavated temples, tombs, amphitheaters, sculptures, inscriptions, and other remains, shedding new light on the unknown history of the city.
