Imabari Castle

…The Iyo provincial capital was located in Tomita on the southern outskirts, and the provincial temple was located in Kokubun, and Sakurai was the center of the area until the early modern period. Todo Takatora, who became the lord in 1600 (Keicho 5), moved into Sakurai's provincial castle, but in 1602 he filled in the sandbar, dug triple moats to draw in seawater, and built Imabari Castle at its current location (only the stone walls and inner moat remain). It has been located as the political and economic center of eastern Iyo, including the southwestern part of the Geiyo Islands, and towel production became active from the end of the Meiji period, based on the cotton industry that emerged in the mid-Edo period, and today it is the largest towel production area in the country. …

…伊予国府は南郊の富田に，また国分寺が国分に置かれ，近世初期まで桜井地区が当地の中心であった。1600年(慶長5)領主となった藤堂高虎は桜井の国府城に入ったが，02年から砂州を埋め，三重の堀をうがって海水を引き，現在地に今張城を築いた(石垣と内堀のみ残す)。芸予諸島の南西部を含む東伊予の政治･経済の中心地として位置してきたが，江戸時代中期に興った木綿産業を基盤に明治末からはタオル生産がさかんとなり，今日では全国一の生産地となった。…
