...The third is Phoenician art, and the fourth is the Phoenician achievement of long-distance navigation. The ancient religion of Syria was basically a fertility cult related to agriculture and oases, and each city had its own Baal (god) and Baalath (goddess), but over time they became syncretized with gods from Greece, Rome, Babylonia, Arabia, etc. Also, Hadad (Adad), the chief god of the Hurrians, was worshiped particularly widely in inland Syria, but was syncretized with Baal.
