A carboxylic acid chloride. A colorless liquid with a pungent odor. It is synthesized by the reaction of benzoic acid with thionyl chloride or by the partial hydrolysis of (trichloromethyl)benzene (α,α,α-trichlorotoluene). It slowly reacts with water to form benzoic acid and hydrogen chloride. It is used as a benzoylating agent to introduce the benzoyl group C 6 H 5 CO- into various organic compounds, and as an intermediate raw material for anthraquinone dyes. It is lachrymatory and irritates the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
