A gulf located in the northeast of the Red Sea. It is part of the Great Rift Valley that stretches from the Dead Sea to East Africa, and was formed by a depression. It is surrounded by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, and Jordan. It is 20-30 km wide and 160 km long. The depth varies, reaching up to 610 m in some places. The mouth of the gulf is narrow and has many reefs, making navigation difficult. The only natural port is Dahab, but Israel has built the port of Elat and Jordan the port of Aqaba. Since the Middle Ages, it has been a route for pilgrims from Egypt to Mecca. In May 1967, President Nasser of the Arab League closed the gulf to all Israeli ships and foreign ships carrying weapons to Israel, which marked the beginning of the Middle East War.
