Atanagildo

… Toledo first figured prominently in history at the end of the Roman period, when the Iberian Christian Church held its third bishops' conference here in 400. Later, when control of the peninsula was transferred from Rome to the Germanic tribe of the Visigoths, their king Atanagildo (reigned 554-567) established his court in Toledo in 560. Until the collapse of the Visigothic Kingdom in 711, Toledo became the political center of the whole of Iberia, and 17 church councils were held here to discuss and decide on policies that spanned both the secular and religious worlds. …
