An animal of the family Cercopithecidae in the order Primates of the class Mammalia. A species endemic to Taiwan, it is closely related to the Japanese macaque M. fuscata, the Indian rhesus macaque M. mulatta, and the crab-eating macaque M. fascicularis of Southeast Asia. Its entire body is gray-brown, with a hairless face that is flesh-colored. It has a sturdy build and a long, thick tail. When females are in heat, the genital skin from the base of the tail to the perineum becomes greatly swollen. It is said to prefer bright mountainous areas to deep forests, and to have a strong tendency to be terrestrial. It is omnivorous, eating mainly plant foods, and also eats insects, snails, and crabs. Its social structure is thought to be very similar to that of the Japanese macaque and the rhesus macaque.
