DeWitt Wallace (1889-1981), the son of an American preacher, and his wife, founded this pocket-sized monthly magazine in Greenwich Village, New York, in 1922. Starting with a circulation of 5,000 copies at the time of its inception, it has since been published in 17 languages and 41 editions, including a Spanish version called "Selecciones" for Latin America and a Japanese version launched in June 1946, and boasts the world's largest circulation of 31 million copies (1984) in 170 countries.
