Born: October 1, 1781, London [Died] April 18, 1867. Sheltenham. British architect. One of the leading British neoclassical architects of the first half of the 19th century. In 1799 he won the gold medal of the Royal Academy, and from 1801 to 1805 he traveled to Italy and Greece, studying classical architecture. In 1806 he designed the huge medieval castle Lowther Palace (1806-11), the Greek-order Covent Garden Theatre (1808-1809, burned down in 1856), the Greek-order British Museum (1823-1847), the Royal College of Physicians (1822-1824), and the General Post Office (1824-1829, destroyed in 1912).
