[Died] April 18, 1867. Sheltenham. British architect. One of the leading British neoclassical architects of the first half of the 19th century. In 1799 he won the gold medal of the Royal Academy, and from 1801 to 1805 he traveled to Italy and Greece, studying classical architecture. In 1806 he designed the huge medieval castle Lowther Palace (1806-11), the Greek-order Covent Garden Theatre (1808-1809, burned down in 1856), the Greek-order British Museum (1823-1847), the Royal College of Physicians (1822-1824), and the General Post Office (1824-1829, destroyed in 1912).

イギリスの建築家。 19世紀前半を代表するイギリス新古典主義の建築家の一人。 1799年ロイヤル・アカデミーの金賞を得，1801年から 05年までイタリア，ギリシアを旅行し，古典建築を研究した。 06年中世風の巨大な城館ロウザー宮の設計 (1806～11) やギリシア・オーダーのコベント・ガーデン劇場 (08～09，56焼失) をはじめ，ギリシア・イオニア式オーダーを用いた大英博物館 (23～47) ，王立医科大学 (22～24) ，中央郵便局 (24～29，1912破壊) などがある。
