Abbreviation: SBR. Synthetic rubber obtained by copolymerizing styrene and butadiene. It is the most widely produced and used type of synthetic rubber, and is a general-purpose synthetic rubber used in most rubber products, including automobile tires. It was researched and industrialized in Germany in the 1930s, and was sold under the name Buna S. During the Pacific War, it was mass-produced and used in the United States for military purposes under the name GR-S as part of the government-managed Government Synthetic Rubber Program.
