Eiffel Tower - Eiffelto (English) Tour Eiffel

This steel tower was built as a monument at the 1889 World's Fair held in Paris to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Its name comes from the name of the engineer who built it, Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel used his own accumulated steel bridge construction techniques to build the world's tallest steel tower, which was unthinkable at the time, at 300 meters above ground. The steel used for the structure was produced in France, and the construction was completed in two years and two months. Currently, the Eiffel Tower is 324 meters tall (2007), and there are observation decks on the first floor (58 meters), second floor (116 meters), and third floor (276 meters), all of which are connected by elevators. At the time of its construction, there was mixed opinion about the impact the tower would have on the cityscape, but it has now become an indispensable part of the Parisian landscape. In 1991, the banks of the Seine in Paris, including the tower, were registered as a World Heritage Site (World Cultural Heritage).

1889年、フランス革命100周年を記念してパリで開催された万国博覧会のときに、その会場のモニュメントとして建設された鉄塔。名称は、それを建設した技術者、ギュスターブ・エッフェルの名前に由来している。地上300メートルの高さという当時の建造物では考えられなかった世界最高の鋼鉄の塔を、エッフェルは、彼自身が蓄積してきた鉄橋の架構技術を駆使して実現した。構造材の鋼鉄はフランス国内で生産されたものを使い、2年2か月の工期で工事を完了している。現在、エッフェル塔の高さは324メートル（2007）で、1階（58メートル）、2階（116メートル）、3階（276メートル）に展望室があり、それぞれをエレベーターが連絡する。なお、建設当時、この塔の都市景観に与える影響について賛否両論があったが、いまではパリの景観に欠くことのできないものとなっている。1991年、この塔を含むパリのセーヌ川の河岸は世界遺産の文化遺産として登録されている（世界文化遺産）。
