After World War I, echo sounders were used, which solved these drawbacks. These emit a pulse signal from the bottom of the ship, receive the reflected sound from the ocean floor, measure the time it takes for the sound to reach the bottom, and calculate the distance from the ship to the ocean floor by measuring the vertical distribution of the speed of sound.
