Honda R&D was founded by Honda Soichiro in 1946. Honda Motor Co. was established in 1948. Honda quickly grew to become the world's top manufacturer of motorcycles, and in 1963, it expanded into automobiles. It also led the way overseas, and in 1982, an automobile factory in Ohio, USA, began operations. Honda was the last manufacturer of automobiles in Japan, but it has developed new vehicles one after another with its own unique concepts. Its technical capabilities are highly regarded, and it is known for being the first manufacturer in the world to develop the CVCC engine that complies with exhaust gas regulations. The largest market is the United States, and Honda has always ranked high in the imported car category. In the domestic market, it has ranked third thanks to its strong performance in RVs and other products. In January 2001, it became known as Honda. It is a leader in environmentally friendly technologies such as hybrid cars and fuel cell cars. In the fiscal year ending March 2009, it sold 3.51 million automobiles and 10.11 million motorcycles. The head office is in Tokyo, and the factories are in Wako, Sayama, and Suzuka. Sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 8,936.8 billion yen, and net income for the period was 534 billion yen. Capital was 86 billion yen (2011). 1946年，本田宗一郎が本田技術研究所として創業。1948年本田技研工業設立。二輪車では世界首位に急成長し，1963年四輪車にも進出。海外進出にも先鞭をつけ，1982年に米国オハイオ州の自動車工場が操業を開始。四輪車では国内最後発だが，独自のコンセプトで次々と新車を開発。その技術力の評価も高く，世界に先駆け排ガス規制対応のCVCCエンジンを開発したことでも知られている。最大の市場は米国で常に輸入車部門の上位に位置している。国内市場でもRV車などの健闘で３位を占めている。2001年１月より通称ホンダとなる。ハイブリッド・カーや燃料電池車などの環境対応技術で先行する。2009年３月期販売台数は四輪車351万台，二輪車1011万台。本社東京，工場和光，狭山，鈴鹿など。2011年３月期売上高８兆9368億円，当期純益5340億円。資本金860億円（2011）。売上構成（％）は，二輪事業14，四輪事業76，金融サービス事業６，汎用事業他３。海外売上比率83％。
