A mining town in central eastern Ontario, Canada. It is located about 220 km north of Sudbury. The surrounding area is a mixed forest zone in the Canadian Shield, and the average temperature in January is -17°C, making it bitterly cold. In 1911, N. Timmins developed it as a residential area for the Hollinger Gold Mine, and it grew rapidly, becoming the commercial center of the gold mining region. There are many hydroelectric power plants in the area that utilize rapids and waterfalls, and they supply electricity not only to the mines, but also to industries such as brewing, paper and pulp, and lumber. Population: 47,461 (1991). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
