In Europe, it was thought that there was a land called Antilia on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean since the Middle Ages, but after Columbus discovered the New World, the Spanish assigned Haiti to Antilia (1493), and on a map of 1502, the islands were called Antilles in Spanish. In addition, the islands northwest of Grenada in the Lesser Antilles are called the Barlovento Islands, or Windward Islands in English, because they are blessed with the trade winds, and the islands off the coast of Venezuela are called the Sotavento Islands (meaning leeward), or Leeward Islands in English. ...
