Phenacetin - phenacetin

Phenacetin - phenacetin

An antipyretic and analgesic. White crystals or crystalline powder. It is said to be well absorbed from the digestive tract and metabolized to acetaminophen, which exerts its pharmacological effects. Side effects include cyanosis due to the formation of methemoglobin, difficulty breathing, tachycardia, collapse accompanied by a drop in body temperature, kidney damage that is likely to occur when large amounts are used continuously, and hemolytic anemia. It was often included in so-called cold medicines.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has called medical professionals to be aware of the risk of kidney damage and increased incidence of renal pelvic and bladder tumors when taken in large amounts over a long period of time, and has not approved over-the-counter drugs containing phenacetin since 1982. Furthermore, following a series of reports of serious kidney damage caused by long-term use of large amounts of prescription drugs between November 2000 and March 2001, the Ministry requested that the supply of phenacetin be suspended, and each company voluntarily suspended its supply as of April 19, 2001.
