Echigo Sanzan

Japanese: 越後三山 - えちごさんざん
Echigo Sanzan
Also known as the Uonuma Sanzan. The name refers to the three mountains of Komagatake (2003m), Nakanodake (2085m), and Hakkaisan (1778m), which form the center of the Echigo Mountains in southeastern Niigata Prefecture. These mountains have been worshipped by many people as sacred mountains since ancient times. Hakkaisan, with its sacred peak of Yatsumine, has been the site of ascetic training since the Middle Ages, replacing Kinpusan in Yoshino, Nara Prefecture. From the end of the early modern period to modern times, it became a sacred place for ascetics, attracting pilgrims from all over the country, and becoming the most sacred mountain in Echigo. In 1973, it was designated as Echigo Sanzan Tadami Quasi-National Park.
