A mountain range that runs northeast-southwest along the border between Niigata Prefecture and the three prefectures of Yamagata, Fukushima, and Gunma. The southwestern part is connected to the Mikuni Mountains. Its main axis is an extension of the Dewa Mountains, which belong to the ancient fold belt of the Oyashima orogenic belt that makes up northeastern Japan. The mountain body is made of granite and diorite that intruded into the Chichibu Mesozoic and Paleozoic strata. It was uplifted by intense ground movement immediately after the Pliocene epoch of the Tertiary period, and the summit has a steep shape due to the erosion of the granite during the middle ages. In the north, the Asahi Mountains, centered on Mt. Oasahi (1,871 meters), and the Budo Mountains are parallel to each other, with intermountain basins such as the Miomotebonchi developing between them. To the south, separated by the Arakawa Gorge, is the majestic Iide Mountains, with branches such as Mt. Iide (2,105 meters), Mt. Dainichi (2,128 meters), and Mt. Nioji (1,420 meters), boasting beautiful mountain shapes typical of the Tohoku region, and designated as the Bandai-Asahi National Park. The Tertiary Kushigata Hills and Gozu Hills, which form the front mountains of the area, are designated as part of the Tainai-Nioji Prefectural Natural Park and the Gozu Mountain Range Prefectural Natural Park in Niigata Prefecture.Furthermore, if you cross the Agano River and enter Higashikanbara County, you will come across the Komagata Mountains, with their main peaks Awagatake (1,293 meters) and Komagatayama (1,072 meters), and are designated as part of the Okuhayade Awasumon Prefectural Natural Park in Niigata Prefecture. The southern end is the Chokai volcanic group, including Mt. Sumon (1,537 meters) and Mt. Asakusa (1,585 meters), the Echigo Sanzan series, including Mt. Hakkai (1,778 meters), Mt. Nakano (2,085 meters), and Mt. Komagatake (2,003 meters), and the Ginzan mountain range, which consists of the prefectural border mountains such as Mt. Arasawa (1,969 meters) and Mt. Hiragatake (2,141 meters), which form a national forest sea and are designated as the Echigo Sanzan Tadami Quasi-National Park. The 2,000-meter-class mountain shape and the beauty of the gorge are the greatest tourist resources, but on the other hand, they are a major obstacle to east-west traffic, and only old passes such as Ikazuchi Pass, Torii Pass, Yashirogoe, and Rokushirogoe are used as routes to other prefectures. There are also legendary villages of remote areas where refugees have fled, such as Oku-Miyamen and Oshirakawa. [Hisao Yamazaki] A sacred mountain in the Echigo Mountain Range. Also known as the Uonuma Sanzan. Located in central-eastern Niigata Prefecture, it is part of the Echigo Sanzan Tadami Quasi-National Park. From the left in the photo, Mt. Komagatake (2,003m above sea level), Mt. Nakanodake (2,085m), and Mt. Hakkai (1,778m). Since ancient times, the mountain has been known as a sacred place, and a traverse known as the "Sanzan Kake" has been carried out. The photo shows the view from Ojiya City.
