Born June 29, 1865 in Fairfield, Illinois Died: January 19, 1940, Washington, DC American politician. Graduated from the University of Kansas. After practicing law in Idaho, he entered politics and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1906, where he served for 33 years. At the end of World War I, he opposed America's membership in the League of Nations and played an active role in preventing the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles. He was considered an isolationist because he criticized the aggressive overseas expansion policy, but on the other hand, he was an early advocate of recognition by the Soviet government, from the standpoint of national self-determination.
