Cannabich - Johann Christian Cannabich

German musician. One of the outstanding composers of the Mannheim School. He played violin in the Mannheim court orchestra under the direction of J. Stamitz, and after his teacher's death he became concertmaster around 1758 and instrumental director in 1774. He built the court orchestra into one with the best performance abilities of the time, and as a composer he left behind many chamber music pieces, including over 90 symphonies. Both his father Martin Friedrich (1675?-after 1759) and his son Carl August (1771-1806) also left their mark as musicians.

ドイツの音楽家。マンハイム楽派の傑出した作曲家の一人。J・シュターミッツの指導下にマンハイムの宮廷楽団でバイオリンを担当し、師の死後の1758年ごろコンサートマスター、74年には器楽監督となった。宮廷楽団を当代随一の演奏能力をもつ楽団に仕立てあげ、作曲家としては90曲余の交響曲をはじめ、多くの室内楽曲を残した。なお、父マルティン・フリードリヒMartin Friedrich（1675？―1759以後）も、息子カール・アウグストCarl August（1771―1806）も音楽家として名を残している。
