An Arab witty figure from the early Islamic period. The most widely accepted theory is that he was Nūḥ Abū al‐Ghuṣn, who lived in the early 8th century. He left behind many anecdotes of wit, cunning, foolishness, and stupidity, and from the 10th century onwards, when these stories were collected, many of the entertaining stories were ascribed to him. As the Islamic world expanded and cultures fused, he became a representative character in entertainment stories throughout the Middle East, and is also identified with Nasreddin Khodja, who is circulated in Turkey.
