paradeisos

Japanese: paradeisos
paradeisos

[Hell, Purgatory, Heaven]
As is clear from the words of Matthew 25:46 quoted above, the idea of eternal life for the righteous, or "heaven," comes naturally in contrast to hell, the destination of the wicked. The Greek word for heaven, paradeisos, comes from Persian and meant a large enclosed pleasure garden where Persian kings enjoyed themselves. It was adopted by Christianity to mean the Garden of Eden and the heavenly abode of the blessed, but Christian doctrine developed further to establish purgatory as the destination of the dead who do not deserve eternal punishment but still need temporary purification.
