In relations with Poland, Gustav II invaded Livonia and occupied Riga (1621), but the stubborn resistance of the Polish nobles, including King Sigismund, was strong, supported by Wallenstein, a general of the German (Holy Roman Empire), and Gustav II gave up his occupation of northern Poland and, with the mediation of French Prime Minister Richelieu, concluded the Peace of Altmark (1629).
