External respiration

In animals, this refers to gas exchange in which respiratory organs such as the lungs, gills, and skin obtain the molecular oxygen necessary to sustain life, and expel carbon dioxide produced as a result of metabolism. Meanwhile, in cells, oxygen is taken in from the outside world through external respiration, and transported into the body, and exchanged for carbon dioxide. This type of cellular respiration is sometimes called internal respiration in contrast to external respiration.

動物において、肺、えら、皮膚などの呼吸器官で生命を維持するために必要な分子状酸素を獲得し、物質代謝の結果生じた二酸化炭素を排出するガス交換をいう。一方、細胞では、外呼吸により外界から取り入れられ、体内に輸送された酸素が二酸化炭素と交換される。この細胞呼吸を外呼吸に対して内呼吸とよぶことがある。
