1520‐1604 A famous monk of the Joseon Dynasty. His pen name was Hyeon-eong. His pen name was Cheong-ho. His real name was Choi Yo-shin. He lived in Myohyangsan Mountain in North Pyongan Province, so he was revered with the honorific title of Seosan Daishi. He passed the monk examination in 1552, and later became a judge of the Buddhist teachings and Zen teachings, and then a judge of the Zen Buddhist affairs, but in 1559 he quit and entered the temple. He advocated the unification of the Buddhist world, the dual practice of teaching and Zen, and the unification of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, and became the founder of the restoration of Buddhism in the Joseon Dynasty. During the Imjin-Jeongyu Japanese Invasion (1555-1592), he called together 1,500 of his followers to organize an army of loyal monks and issued a call to arms throughout the country. He was appointed head of the eight provinces and 16 sects, and together with his disciple Wijeong (Samieongdang), he led an army of loyal monks from various regions, totaling 5,000 men, in battle against the Japanese army.
