Dolomite

Dolomite

A double carbonate mineral of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) closely related to calcite. Dolomite, which contains it as its main component, is also called dolomite and occurs as a sedimentary rock. Dolomite forms veins in ultramafic rocks and occurs as a gangue mineral in medium to low temperature hydrothermal veins. It is also being formed on the present-day ocean floor by replacing calcareous sediments. Most of its euhedral form is a relatively simple rhombohedron. In Japan, famous production areas include the former Kuzuu-cho area of Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Nakase Mine (closed) in Yoshii, Sekinomiya Town, Hyogo Prefecture (now Nakase, Yabu City). When subjected to high-temperature metasomatism by the intrusion of granite, it forms skarn containing forsterite, diopside, phlogopite, forsterite (spinel), monoclinic humite, etc. It looks similar to calcite, but is slightly denser, harder, somewhat lustrous, and less soluble in acid. Its English name comes from the French mineralogist Déodat de Dolomieu (1750-1801).
