putto

Japanese: putto
putto

...From the late Greek period to the Roman Empire, these winged children began to appear in large numbers in art, and they were no longer part of mythology, but simply acted out various situations in which they imitated adults. Such erotes (amores) were revived in Renaissance art as putti (singular: putto). In myth, Eros' mother is sometimes named as Eileithyia, the goddess of childbirth, or Iris, the goddess of the rainbow, and there is also a legend that Zephyros, the god of the west wind, is his father.
