It is the largest national center in Italy, and is one of the three major labor unions along with CISL (Italian General Confederation of Workers' Unions) and UIL (Italian General Confederation of Labor). The predecessor of CGIL, CGL, was founded in 1906, and reformists dominated the CGL, which had 200,000 members, and was opposed by revolutionary syndicalists.
