From [Crocodile]

[Systematics, Classification]
The ancestral form of crocodiles evolved from alveolodonts in the late Triassic period, and many large species, including marine ones, flourished in the Mesozoic era. There are various theories on the classification of extant species, but they are often divided into two families, Alligatoridae and Crocodylidae, based on differences in the structure of the internal nostrils, dentition, and scales. The Alligatoridae family includes the Chinese crocodile, Mississippi crocodile, spectacled caiman (illustration), and black caiman, while the Crocodylidae family includes the saltwater crocodile, Nile crocodile, gavial (illustration), marsh crocodile, and American crocodile.
