The northern periphery of the Iberian Massif was uplifted and collapsed to the south, creating a complex topography, while the southern periphery was a large depression caused by a fault, forming the southern edge of the South Meseta, known as the Guadalquivir Fault. In addition to these crustal movements, the Alpine orogeny formed the Cantabrian Mountains in the north, the Basque Mountains in the northeast, the Pyrenees in the northeast, and the Sub-Betic Mountains in the south, which border the Iberian Massif. …
