Japanese: アキメネス - あきめねす

A general term for the genus Achimenes in the Gesneriaceae family (APG classification: Gesneriaceae). A spring-planted bulbous plant native to tropical America. Approximately 26 species ( A. coccinea Pers., A. grandiflora DC., etc.) are distributed from Mexico to Brazil and Argentina. Many horticultural varieties created by crossbreeding are also cultivated as potted plants in the summer. The bulbs are small, pine-cone-shaped tubers with a height of 20 to 30 centimeters. The leaves are opposite or whorled, the flowers grow alternately from the axils, and the flower tubes are long and open at the tips. Flower colors vary widely, including red, purple, blue, and white, depending on the variety.

Cultivation

The scientific name, Achimenes , means "weak to the cold" in Latin, and a minimum cultivation temperature of 18°C is required. A temperature of 10°C is ideal for storing bulbs from autumn to winter. From January to March, store bulbs and bury them in vermiculite or sand and encourage germination at 20-25°C. When the sprouts have grown to about 2cm, plant 3-5 bulbs in a No. 3 or No. 4 pot in well-drained potting soil. Grow them in a shaded area using cheesecloth or similar. They can be propagated by bulbs or by cuttings.

栽培

学名のAchimenesはラテン語で「寒さに弱い」という意味で栽培温度は最低18℃が必要。秋から冬にかけての球根の貯蔵温度は10℃がよい。貯蔵しておいた球根を1～3月、バーミキュライト、砂などに埋めて20～25℃で催芽させる。芽が2センチメートルくらい伸びたら、3または4号鉢に排水のよい培養土で3～5球植える。寒冷紗(しゃ)などで日除けして栽培する。繁殖は球根のほか挿芽も可能。
