A former town in Masuda County, central Gifu Prefecture. Located in the Masuda River basin, most of the area is mountain forest. The main settlement, Hagiwara, developed as a post town on the Hida (Masuda) Highway, and is the center of the southern Hida region, with forestry thriving. The Takayama Main Line passes through the town. There is a large cedar tree (a natural monument) at Zenshoji Temple. In March 2004, it merged with Kosaka Town, Gero Town, Kanayama Town, and Maze Village in Masuda County to form Gero City. 143.15 km2 . Population: 11,826 (2003). 岐阜県中部,益田(ました)郡の旧町。益田川流域にあり,大半は山林。主集落萩原は飛騨(益田)街道の宿場町として発達,飛騨地方南部の中心で,林業が盛ん。高山本線が通じる。禅昌寺の大スギ(天然記念物)がある。2004年3月益田郡小坂町,下呂町,金山町,馬瀬村と合併し,下呂市となる。143.15km2。1万1826人(2003)。
