[From the Renaissance to the Early Modern Period: Hotels, Apartments and Terrace Houses]
The challenge in Renaissance residential architecture was to reconcile the asymmetrical floor plan that had existed since the Middle Ages with the symmetrical wall structure of Classicism. Alberti applied a design that combined orders and arches derived from the Colosseum in Rome to the front wall of Palazzo Rucellai (1446-51) in Florence, marking the beginning of urban residences with Renaissance designs. The English architect Robert Smythson (c. 1535-1614) attempted to give symmetrical wall structures to large medieval mansions centered around a hall through the design of country houses such as Longleat House (c. 1568-75).
