Born: March 12, 1672. Baptized: Dublin Died: September 1, 1729. Camarthan. British journalist and playwright. After graduating from Oxford University, he joined the military and was promoted to captain. He wrote plays such as The Tender Husband (1705), a comedy that added morality to the style of Restoration-era comedies. He then founded the essay newspaper The Tatler in 1709, which closed in 1711. Two months later, he and his friend Addison launched The Spectator. Aimed at readers of the emerging middle class, the newspaper provided enlightening lessons in a gentle tone, covering everyday events, theater, literature, and customs, giving a good glimpse into the customs of the time. He was also active in political commentary and was elected to Parliament, but in his later years he had a falling out with Addison and was unfortunate.
