...This was a successor to the activities of the New Ottoman Association, which was led by Namuk Kemal and others, who tried to introduce modern Western civilization and reform the Ottoman Empire. In 1897, the activities within the Ottoman Empire ceased, and the overseas activities of Ahmet Rıza (1859-1930) in Paris and others became the core of the association. In addition to Turks, representatives of the various ethnic groups under the Ottoman Empire, such as Arabs, Greeks, Kurds, Armenians, and Albanians, participated in the association. In 1902, the association split into a centralist faction that emphasized its position as Ottomans, and a decentralist faction that respected the movements of the various ethnic groups. In 1906, Kemal Atatürk, who had organized the Committee for Homeland and Freedom, joined the association, and the headquarters of the Committee for Unity and Progress was established in Thessaloniki. ...
