Just as population statistics are one of the basic pieces of information in human society, population size or population density is important information about animal populations. Population size estimation is necessary not only as basic knowledge in ecology, but also in practical terms, such as in relation to agricultural pest control and fishery resource management. For this reason, theoretical and technical developments in population size estimation methods have been ongoing for a long time. The simplest method would be to count all members of the target population, but this is virtually impossible except for small populations of large animals.

人口統計が人間社会の基礎的情報の一つであるように，個体数あるいは生息密度は動物の個体群に関する重要な情報である。生態学の基礎的知見としてだけでなく，農業害虫の抑制，水産資源管理などとも関連して，実際的な面でも個体数推定は必要となる。そのため古くから個体数推定法について理論的あるいは技術的に開発が続けられてきた。最も単純には，対象個体群の成員をすべて計数すればよいわけだが，これは大型動物の小さな個体群を除いてはほとんど不可能といってよい。
