Campobasso (English spelling)

It is the capital of the Molise region in central Italy, and also the capital of Campobasso Province. It is about 85 km north-northeast of Naples, and the old walled town is on a hill. In 1732, the people abandoned the old town and built a new one on the plain. The old town contains the Castello Monforte Castle (1459) and the Romanesque churches of St. Leonard, St. Bartolomeo and St. Giorgio, while the new town has a church and a museum. Pears and cheese are produced, and tiles, soap and cutlery are also manufactured. The town is on the railway line between Benevento and Termoli. Population 51,630 (estimated 1991).
