Hartebeest - Hartebeest (English spelling)

A general term for animals in the genus Alcelaphus, family Bovidae, order Artiodactyla, class Mammalia. Antelopes of this genus Alcelaphus are distributed throughout Africa, living in open grasslands and grasslands dotted with scrub forests. They stand 1.2-1.5 meters tall at the shoulder and weigh 160-180 kilograms. Both sexes have harp-shaped horns, which are 25-38 centimeters long. Their bodies vary in color from sand to chestnut red. They usually live in herds of 4-30, sometimes forming mixed groups with wildebeests and zebras. They mostly feed on grass, preferring short and young grass. While feeding, males or older females often stand guard. The gestation period is about eight months, and they give birth to one calf at a time in April-May in eastern Africa and in July-August in southern Africa. Scholars have divided them into two to eight species, including the now-extinct northern hartebeest A. buselaphus of northern Africa, the Congo hartebeest A. cokei of Kenya and Tanzania, the Kama hartebeest A. caama of southern Africa, and the Congo hartebeest A. lichtensteini of southeastern Africa.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目ウシ科ハーテビースト属に含まれる動物の総称。この属Alcelaphusのアンテロープはアフリカに分布し、開けた草原や低木林が点在する草原に生息する。肩高1.2～1.5メートル、体重160～180キログラム。角(つの)は雌雄にあり、長さ25～38センチメートルで、竪琴(たてごと)形である。体は砂色から赤栗(あかぐり)色まで変化に富む。普通、4～30頭の群れで生活し、ヌーやシマウマと混合群をつくることもある。食物はほとんどが草で、丈の低い草や若草を好む。採食中は雄か老雌が見張りに立つことも多い。妊娠期間は約8か月で、アフリカの東部では4～5月に、南部では7～8月に1産1子を産む。現在では絶滅したアフリカ北部のキタハーテビーストA. buselaphus、ケニアとタンザニアのコンゴニハーテビーストA. cokei、アフリカ南部のカーマハーテビーストA. caama、アフリカ南東部のコンジハーテビーストA. lichtensteiniなどがあるが、学者によって2～8種に分けられている。
