American newspaper entrepreneur. In 1910, he co-founded the Chicago Tribune with his cousin Joseph Medill Patterson (1879-1944), and became sole owner in 1925. The paper had a right-wing editorial policy that advocated anti-communism and isolationism, and boasted the largest circulation in the Midwest. After World War II, he expressed opposition to American foreign policy, especially the Marshall Plan and UN policy. In 1949, he bought the Washington Times-Herald, but due to poor performance, he sold it to the Washington Post in 1954.
