Dinka people - Dinka people (English spelling)
A Nilo-speaking cattle pastoralist who lives in the savannah along the Nile River in northern South Sudan. The population was over 4 million in the early 21st century. In the dry season, they graze their cattle along the river, and in the rainy season, they return to their hilltop settlements to cultivate corn. The smallest unit of social organization is the extended family, but as political units, nomadic camps are grouped together into sub-segments, which form many social groups numbering between 1,000 and 30,000. These groups are dispersed and autonomous, and do not have a chief. Traditionally, priests, who are the spiritual leaders of the groups as recognized in mythology, are derived from each patrilineal clan. Cattle are central to their value not only economically, but also as bride prices and sacrificial animals.
