Born in the 9th year of Kenkyu. Sōtō sect. He studied under Butsuchi Kakuan of the Japanese Daruma sect, and with his advice, he studied under Dogen and inherited his teachings. He assisted in the founding of Eiheiji Temple in Echizen (Fukui Prefecture), and later became the second head priest. He assisted in the compilation of Dogen's Shobogenzō. His disciples recorded his teacher's teachings and compiled them as Shobogenzō Zuimonki. He was also called Koun Kaiso. He passed away on August 24th, 3rd year of Kōan. He was 83 years old.
