Huaisang - Ejo

Japanese: 懐奘 - えじょう

1198-1280 A monk from the Kamakura period.
Born in the 9th year of Kenkyu. Sōtō sect. He studied under Butsuchi Kakuan of the Japanese Daruma sect, and with his advice, he studied under Dogen and inherited his teachings. He assisted in the founding of Eiheiji Temple in Echizen (Fukui Prefecture), and later became the second head priest. He assisted in the compilation of Dogen's Shobogenzō. His disciples recorded his teacher's teachings and compiled them as Shobogenzō Zuimonki. He was also called Koun Kaiso. He passed away on August 24th, 3rd year of Kōan. He was 83 years old. Born in Kyoto. His secular surname was Kujo. His posthumous name was Dokou Fusho Kokushi.

建久9年生まれ。曹洞(そうとう)宗。日本達磨(だるま)宗の仏地覚晏(ぶつち-かくあん)にまなび,その助言で道元に師事し,その法をつぐ。越前(えちぜん)(福井県)永平寺の創建に助力し,のち2世となる。道元の「正法眼蔵(しょうぼうげんぞう)」の編述に協力。師の教えを筆録,門下が「正法眼蔵随聞記(ずいもんき)」としてまとめた。孤雲(こうん)懐奘とも称される。弘安(こうあん)3年8月24日死去。83歳。京都出身。俗姓は九条。諡号(しごう)は道光普照国師。
