Shinyu Kyogoku - Shinyu Kyogoku

Japanese: 辛酉教獄 - しんゆうきょうごく
Shinyu Kyogoku - Shinyu Kyogoku
An incident of persecution of Christianity (Western religion) that occurred in Korea in 1801 (Shinyou) at the end of the Yi dynasty. Since Yi Seung-hun became the first Korean Christian in 1784, about 4,000 progressive students (Si faction) of the time participated in Christian studies, thanks to the activities of Chinese missionary Zhou Wen-mo (1752-1801) sent from the Beijing Cathedral. King Jeongjo was peaceful towards Christianity, but when his son Sun-jo ascended to the throne, conservative faction (Bek-ha) gained power and Christianity was labeled as a heretical religion. About 140 Western religionists were brutally murdered, and Zhou Wen-mo was also executed.
