Bell System Research Laboratories was established in 1925 as the research division of the huge Bell System, which operates and maintains most of the American telephone network, by integrating the laboratories attached to the various companies under the Bell System's umbrella. It was established with joint investment from AT&T (American Telephone and Telegraph Company) and Western Electric, the core companies of the Bell System. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, several large companies began to set up their own laboratories to carry out technological development, and the Bell System companies also adopted this approach from the beginning of the 20th century, working to strengthen their research teams.
