Hamaomoto ( C. asiaticum L. var. japonicum Bak.), also known as Hamayu (beach cotton), is an evergreen perennial plant that grows wild on the warm coasts of the Kanto region and west. The flower stalk is about 70 cm tall, and the leaves are basal, 70 cm long and 8 cm wide, shiny, and similar to the leaves of Omoto. From early summer to autumn, 10 to 20 thinly torn white flowers appear at the tip of the flower stalk. The seeds float on water and are carried to sandy beaches by ocean currents in various places. There are varieties with yellow vertical stripes on the leaves and varieties with star-shaped spots on the leaves, which can be enjoyed as ornamental plants. Although it is somewhat sensitive to the cold, it will survive winter outdoors in the Kansai region and west. It is propagated by seedlings or division. For potting, use a pot of size 8 or more, and place in a sunny, well-ventilated place.

C. latifolium L. is a large species native to India. In summer, it produces numerous pink or white flowers similar to trumpet lilies. The leaves are bright green and about 80 cm long and 10 cm wide. In areas west of the Kanto region, it can overwinter outdoors. It does not produce seeds, so it is propagated by division. C. powellii hort. is a cold-resistant horticultural species bred in the UK. The tips of the flowers are reddish. Other varieties include C. amabile Donn, which is reddish purple, and C. moorei Hook.f., which is white with a pink tinge.
